Sep 23 - Week 6 - Meeting 6 / The Power of the Mind (Pages 9 - 10)
Unit: You are Your Instrument
Theme: The Power of the Mind
I
Introduction
As mentioned, playing the viola demands an understanding of the muscular structure of the player's body. However, the mind is also important. The musician should also work towards developing a connection between body and mind. This requires for musicians to experience carefully guided mental development.

Structure of the Mind
The ascending arousal system, limbic system, memory and language circuits, association areas, and the prefrontal cortex constitute the basic structural substrate for the human psyche. The functions are dependent on the balance between the excitatory and inhibitory activities of the neurotransmitters.
The ascending arousal system (AAS), or ascending reticular activating system (ARAS), is a network of neural pathways originating in the brainstem that extends to the thalamus, hypothalamus, basal forebrain, and cortex, playing a crucial role in consciousness, wakefulness, and attention. It maintains the brain's state of awareness by stimulating the cerebral cortex through various nuclei and neurotransmitters, including dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin, allowing the brain to process sensory information and stay alert. Dysfunction in the AAS is linked to disorders of consciousness, dementia, and attentional deficits.
The limbic system: It is a group of structures in your brain that regulate your emotions, behavior, motivation and memory.
The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is the anterior part of the frontal lobe, responsible for complex cognitive functions like planning, decision-making, impulse control, and social behavior.
